Karl Fender OAM

Congratulations

WOLF Architects would like to acknowledge and congratulate Karl Fender of Fender Katsadilis on receiving the Order of Australia Medal, on the Queens Birthday weekend 2017, in recognition for his service to architecture and to professional institutions.
Karl Fender trained under the influential Australian modernist architect Robin Boyd, whose design focused approach shaped Karl’s architectural principles. He then spent many years gaining international experience, working in Europe and then, after completing his masters at Harvard, he worked in Asia.
With a desire to learn from only the best, Mr Wolf sought out an intern-ship at the then boutique practice Nation Fender Architects in the early 1990s. It was under the guidance of Karl Fender that Mr Wolf developed his appreciation and mastery of fine detail. Mr Wolf and his mentor share an appreciation of the effort and skills that go into true craftsmanship. Mr Wolf considers his time spent working under Karl Fender to be his most influential, underlying his own design principles and practice.
After more than 20 years Karl Fender and Mr Wolf retain a student and mentor relationship that has matured into friendship. In 2015 Karl Fender visited Wolf House and was impressed at by the “extremely sensitive suburban intervention” that this contemporary home creates in the leafy Melbourne suburb of Chadstone.
As the student becomes the master, the progression of intentional and purposeful modern design flows on and progresses through the generations, as Mr Wolf now mentors his own interns. We are very grateful for the advances that Karl Fender has made in the world of design, and his Order of Australia Medal honour is well deserved.
WOLF Architects will continue to use his inspiration to develop revolutionary designs, and maybe one day Mr Wolf may achieve the same acclaim as his mentor.
