The Z House

Summary

The Z House was designed to maximise the site as much as possible to cater for the young family’s needs as they grow. Connectivity and flexibility were important elements of the brief in order to accommodate an active and playful family lifestyle. Located in a highly prized court area the client wanted the largest family home possible to accommodate and nurture their young family and they live and grow through to adulthood. In order to maximise the house the building overall had to respond closely to the boundaries of the site which resulted in a home that is almost triangular in from.

With a large north facing aspect, the backyard became an open recreational space complete with a swimming pool for the family to enjoy. The pool was designed to connect to the homes main living spaces so that the water would always be visible from most areas of the house.

Despite the size of the house, the large central void space allows the family to remain connected no matter where they are or what they’re doing.

A key factor in really maximizing the living space was the generous basement of which WOLF ARCHITECTS designed to accommodate five cars, bikes, a home theatre, gym, cellar and multipurpose playroom. Unfortunately the site did have a lot of rock in the ground which required significant engineering and site preparations causing delays in the construction phase.
