Our First Residential Project in Toorak That Defined Our Approach to Architecture in Melbourne
Every architectural practice has an origin story, a defining project that shapes everything that follows. For Wolf Architects, that story began in 1993 with our very first residential project in Toorak, one of Melbourne’s most prestigious suburbs.
At the time, our founder Taras Wolf was a young architect working at NFA Architects, now known as FK Architects. His talent quickly attracted the attention of a private client, leading to his first independent commission.
This project was a comprehensive undertaking in both architecture and interior design, located in the heart of Toorak. It marked the beginning of what would become a defining approach to residential architecture in Toorak and across Melbourne.
A Radical Minimalist Vision
Situated within walking distance of Toorak Village, the location demanded an uncompromising level of quality and refinement. Yet, Taras chose a bold and unconventional direction.
Inspired by the reductive work of British architect John Pawson, he introduced a minimalist architectural language into a suburb traditionally defined by ornamentation and classical detailing.
In the early 1990s, minimalism was almost unheard of in Melbourne residential design. The challenge was not simply to remove excess, but to ensure the space still felt inherently luxurious.
Taras achieved this by grounding minimalism in classical proportions and selecting a refined palette of timeless materials. This balance between restraint and richness continues to define how we approach luxury homes in Toorak today.
A Brave Approach to Materiality and Quality

High end residential architecture in Melbourne was dominated by glossy finishes and decorative surfaces. Against this backdrop, Taras made the deliberate decision to specify flat matte and satin finishes throughout the home.
This required an exceptional level of craftsmanship, as matte finishes reveal every imperfection.
Material selection was equally precise. Premium travertine stone was chosen with a honed finish, and Taras personally selected each slab. Every tile was numbered and installed in sequence to create a seamless, continuous surface.
Authentic materials such as marble and granite were used extensively, reinforcing a sense of permanence expected in residential architecture in Toorak.
Forging New Standards in Craftsmanship
What is now considered standard in contemporary design was highly unconventional at the time.
The removal of skirting boards, architraves, and cornices created a completely trimless aesthetic, leaving no margin for construction error.
To ensure this could be achieved, Taras personally produced detailed construction drawings by hand, often at full scale, to guide builders through unfamiliar detailing.
This commitment to precision became a defining principle of our work and remains central to how we design homes as architects in Toorak today.
Symmetry, Secrecy, and Innovation
The spatial layout of the penthouse was a masterclass in controlled elegance, introducing ideas that were far ahead of their time in residential architecture in Toorak.
- The Gallery Corridors: The home introduced itself through a perfectly symmetrical formal entry, grounded by four square columns and illuminated by a central skylight. From here, three passageways branched out to function as an elegant internal gallery. To maintain clean architectural lines, concealed flush doors were integrated to discreetly house functional spaces such as the laundry and storage.
- Concealed Technology: Custom designed wall pockets were incorporated throughout the home to hide everyday elements such as light switches and telephones, maintaining a seamless and minimalist interior experience expected in luxury homes in Toorak.
- A Handleless Kitchen: Centred around a compact island, the kitchen was designed as a perfectly symmetrical composition. The entire space was completely handleless, an engineering challenge that was highly complex and rarely executed in Melbourne residential architecture at the time.
- Bespoke Window Treatments: Finding window furnishings that aligned with a minimalist vision was a challenge. A unique blind system was selected that sat as a flat, taut panel when closed and folded neatly into itself when opened, maintaining visual clarity and restraint.
- Custom Furniture Design: Due to the limited availability of minimalist furniture in Australia at the time, Taras designed bespoke pieces including bedheads and desks. This ensured every element within the home followed a consistent geometric language, a principle that continues to define high end residential architecture in Toorak.
The Powder Room as Interactive Art
One of the most innovative spaces within the project was the concealed powder room. Designed as both a functional space and an artistic experience, it reflected the level of detail embedded throughout the home.
A floating stainless steel vanity appeared to defy gravity, supported entirely by exposed plumbing. The mirror behind it required absolute precision, with openings aligned perfectly to avoid structural failure.
Imported Vola fittings were used to complete the design, with unconventional placement encouraging interaction and curiosity.
This approach demonstrates how even the smallest spaces can contribute to the overall experience of a home.
