It’s all in the name!
Architects bring life, energy, personality and character to what others may see as crude matter. A small bedroom is not just 40 cubic metres of air, it is also many hours of privacy, intimacy, and contemplation. Ultimately, it can also become an eternal memory or identity.
Spaces have meaning when we give them a purpose, some care and attention. A living room is called such because it is designed to be lived in. Yet many houses have living rooms that are merely for show as the family prefer to live in the family room. Thus the living room should really be called the ‘For Show Room’.
At Wolf Architects we are very interested in one’s sense of place and names are very important. A house we are working on now has a conversation room for example because that is exactly what it is meant for. By choosing the right name for a space or object, it seems to come to life just asWilson did in the movie Cast Away.
We even apply names to the computers that we work on. In the office at Wolf Architects live a ten year old PC named the Dinosaur, a cool one called the Black Cat and two powerful ones called theSuper Computer and the Super Girl. Maybe it’s a little weird but it works for us.
Quiz question: Where does the computer name Miles come from?
