However, over the last year, we have noticed an escalating trend. Increasingly, our clients are coming to us with high resolution, ultra realistic renderings of homes they have generated themselves using AI image tools.
It feels intoxicating to have that kind of creative power right at your fingertips. You type in a few descriptors, click a button, and within seconds, a stunning image appears on your screen. It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking, “I have designed my dream home. Why do I need an architect?”
The temptation to bypass architectural fees is understandable. But doing so lures homeowners directly into a massive trap, one that leads to bad design, unlivable spaces, and devastating, multi million dollar money pits.
Because at the end of the day, a building is a physical object. Once realised in concrete, steel, and glass, it cannot be easily erased or edited like a line of code. For most people, a custom home is a once in a lifetime investment. You simply cannot afford to get it wrong.
Here is why AI alone will never replace an architect, and why taking a computer prompt straight to a builder is the ultimate risk.

What the world is experiencing right now with AI feels remarkably familiar to us. We have seen this movie before.
20 Years Ago: The Scrapbook Era. Flooded with DIY renovation TV shows and design magazines, clients brought us scrapbooks packed with cut out photos. Those cheeky individuals who thought they could bypass an architect took their scrapbooks directly to builders, saying, “All my ideas are right here.” The result was a disjointed, chaotic mess. The builders were guessing, and the clients were crushed when the physical reality did not match the picture.
10 Years Ago: The Pinterest Era. As the internet took over, scrapbooks were replaced by massive digital mood boards. Once again, people bypassed architects to save money, creating a wave of homes that looked flashy online, but felt horrific to actually inhabit.
Today: The AI Era. Now, AI gives you hyper realistic images instead of magazine cut outs. But underneath the shiny technology, the mechanism is identical.
When you take a living room from one magazine and slap it onto a kitchen from another, you get a forced “fusion”. Have you ever eaten at a mediocre fusion restaurant? You leave feeling unsatisfied and confused. Only a master chef knows how to mix flavours correctly.
At least when clients bring their ideas to an architect, we act as that master chef, sifting through the noise to find out what they actually want.
Case in Point: A client once brought us images of a traditional Spanish home, convinced that Spanish architecture was their dream style. After asking the right questions, we discovered they did not actually like Spanish styling at all. They just loved the warm colour of the terracotta roof tiles.
Without an architect to decode that nuance, they would have built a Spanish villa they secretly hated. Imagine how much misinterpretation happens when you take an AI generated image directly to a contractor.
Images Are Not Reality: The Hollywood vs. Real Life Effect
The experience of seeing something on a screen is vastly different from experiencing it in physical space.
Think of anyone who has survived a traumatic real life event and later watched a Hollywood film based on their story. They will tell you immediately that the movie version is not how it actually felt. Or consider AI generated music. AI generates pretty pictures in a complete vacuum. It designs for an imaginary plot of land in a fantasy world with perfect weather. An algorithm cannot account for the invisible, hyper specific constraints of real world construction:
Local Council Zoning and Building Codes: AI has no concept of height limits, council setback rules, heritage overlays, or site coverage regulations. What looks amazing in a render might be completely illegal to build on your block.

But it takes 30 years of experience to know how to engineer that roof so it does not collapse, how to route the plumbing and air conditioning ducts invisibly, and how to keep rainwater out for the next 100 years.
Constructive Friction: AI is an echo chamber. It just gives you a variation of whatever prompt you type in. A great architect challenges your brief. We ask, “Do you really need a 6th bedroom, or do you actually just need a flexible space that evolves as your children grow?”

AI tools do not create anything truly new. They are sophisticated mirrors of what already exists, using calculating algorithms that mix, match, and draw data from things that have already been built.
